Provenance: Vittorio Spinazzola (Matera 1863 – Rome 1943). Spinazzola was director of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (from 1910), Superintendent of the excavations and museums of Campania and Molise and director of the excavations of Pompeii (from 1910 to 1923). Spinazzola founded the Society of the Nine Muses with Francesco Netti and Benedetto Croce. Gabriele D’Annunzio’s drama “La città morta” derives from an idea of Spinazzola.
