Oil on canvas cm 23 x 33 signed lower center. From L’ippica a Roma 1844-1884 edited by Domenico Rotella: “In January 1870 Sissi, that is, the Imperial Princess of Austria was present at the Roman meet. She had come to Rome on the event of the birth of her sister’s daughter, once the Queen of Naples, and for this circumstance she had asked Pope Pio IX to authorize again hunting and horse races which had been banned because of deadly accidents. She joined the meet at Cecilia Metella where the committee had prepared a rich lunch under a tent and the Prince Borghese provided the historical set of dinner service which had belonged to Napoleon I. The meet was crowded, smart and joyful.”
