Project Description

Antonino Calcagnadoro ( Rieti 1876 – Rome 1935 ), The death of the shepherd

Etching cm 31 x 40 on cm 49 x 73 sheet, entitled lower left, dated ( 1928 ), signed and situated ( Rome ) lower right. Autograph inscription of the painter “All’amico carissimo Carlini, Roma 1928” lower right.
Calcagnadoro drew an etching from the namesake painting that was on display in Rieti in the exhibition held in 1977 ( Birth Centenary of Antonino Calcagnadoro, Memorial Exhibition, Town Hall, Rieti 1977, April 9 – May 31, p. 37 n. 39, rev. ) and is preserved in the Civic Museum, where also is on display the relative sketch. Of this artwork, approachable for dramatic and pietistic values to “The Mothers”, Ines Millesimi wrote that “among his paintings with a social background, in the broadest sense of the term, remains perhaps the most poignant interpretation because of that shepherd imagined as a taken down Christ.”
