Project Description
Antonino Calcagnadoro ( Rieti 1876 – Rome 1935 ), The mothers
Oil on cardboard cm 39 x 48, signed with inscription ( “all’amico carissimo Carlini con affetto” ) and dated ( 1923 ) lower right.
This painting shows itself as a well done sketch of the namesake artwork made in 1925, on display at Galleria Comunale d’Arte Moderna in Rome. Calcagnadoro changes only the angle of the composition, picking up, on a further surface different from that painted in the last version, the group of crying women wrapped up dark mantles, among them stands out the whiteness of the child in his mother’s arms, placed in the middle, note of hope inserted in an intense dramatic situation.
