Project Description

Ippolito Caffi (Belluno 1809 – Lissa 1866), Piazza Colonna

Watercolor on paper, 21 x 28 cm, signed lower left. The inscription on the back reads “Rome, Piazza Colonna, circa 1840, watercolor by Ippolito Caffi 1809 – 1866.”

This is a very rare view of Piazza Colonna, which depicts Palazzo Wedekind before its final renovation in 1879, when the current clock was placed on the attic above the façade, replacing the two previous diurnal and nocturnal clocks, which marked the hours in the Italian and French style.
