Project Description

Antonino Calcagnadoro ( Rieti 1876 – Rome 1935 ), Selfportrait

Oil on canvas cm 43 x 33 signed and situated ( Rome ), with the painter’s inscription ( “All’amico Carlini la facciaccia mia” ) lower left.

Probably dating to the end of the Twenties, this portrait reveals in the dedication, in spite of a composed and official setting of the effigy of the painter depicted in elegant dress, sharp eyes, clear evidence of a hidden psychological complexity, a burlesque intent: a nice “facciaccia” ( ugly face ) brought as a gift to his friend Alfredo Carlini, his patron.
